NZ vs BAN: We didn’t bowl as well as we could have – Bangladesh fast bowling coach Ottis Gibson

Bangladesh’s fast bowling coach Ottis Gibson felt his bowlers did not bowl as well as they did in the second Test against New Zealand on Sunday. He also hopes that the bowlers will learn well from their ineffective performances on the first day to make a comeback in the rest of the day.

After winning the first Test by eight wickets by bowling out New Zealand for 328 and 169, Bangladesh were not able to recreate the same magic and the hosts were forced to score 349/1 on the first day of the second Test at Hagley Oval.

“Obviously, they played really well and unfortunately, we haven’t been able to touch the heights of discipline since last week. I thought Latham played really well. He bowled very good deliveries in the beginning and got us bowling in front of him. Unfortunately, we didn’t bowl enough good deliveries to create the kind of pressure we had created last week. Conway is in incredible form, isn’t it? He went in and made it so easy,” Gibson said at a post-day press conference.

He also said that the pitch does not live up to its reputation of helping fast bowlers. He said, ‘The pitch did not do as much as we expected. Like, you look at the greenery and expect it to do more. Also, I’m not going to make excuses for us. We didn’t bowl as well as we could have.”

Gibson felt Bangladesh were still under the influence of a surprise on Mount Maunganui and New Zealand returned in style in Christchurch.

“We saw the ups and downs of the international game today. Last week, we were at a high. We are, perhaps, still feeling the effects of last week’s emotional and physical investment. We didn’t hit our bandages.

“New Zealand must have been hurting since last week. They came back and showed why they are one of the best teams in the world. He himself applied. They went much better. They showed us why they are holding the mace all this time.”

Gibson said both the Tests are still part of a steep learning curve for the developing Bangladesh bowlers. “You see the inexperience of the bowling attack. Abadot is our most experienced fast bowler with 12 games. Taskin is playing his ninth while Shorful is playing his third or fourth. We look at the inexperience of the bowling attack and see where they got last week in terms of growth and learning. But then, today is a lesson for them, international sport is tough.

“It is tough business and you have to be prepared for every situation. Unfortunately, the discipline shown last week could not make it. I think the attitude was good but we could not create the discipline as we could have. When we got our length, there was not much seam movement and the New Zealand batsmen were able to take advantage of that. Those people will move on and I hope they learn a lot from the previous game and also from this game to recognize that when an opportunity presents itself, you have to take it.
