Nutritionists explain the pros and cons of drinking a lot of water during pregnancy

According to a report in The Indian Express, nutritionist and founder of HealthSec, Preetika Bedi talks about the pros and cons of drinking water during pregnancy. According to him, consuming too much water can make a pregnant woman feel tired. In such a case, “the kidneys may have to work even harder” leading to a “stressful hormonal response that leaves the body anxious and tired”.

“When you drink too much water, your electrolyte levels drop, and your body’s balance is out of whack. When electrolyte levels are low, symptoms including muscle pain and cramps can occur. Water intoxication This can happen when women consume large amounts of water in a short span of time. Side effects include confusion, drowsiness and headache,” the news portal quoted the health expert as saying.

Despite the drawbacks, pregnant women should not think of eliminating water from their lifestyle as it has benefits for both the mother and the foetus.

Make sure you drink water every day to avoid constipation, a common ailment among pregnant women,” explained Preetika.

According to Intermountain Healthcare, pregnant women need to drink 8-10 glasses or 2.3 liters of water a day to avoid serious complications. The report further suggests that if you are failing to consume enough water every day, add fruits like lemons, limes and frozen raspberries to your water to avoid dehydration.
