Nushrat Bharucha: I have never been pregnant, it is impossible for me to understand the depth

Two of Nushrat Bharucha’s films released on OTT during the Covid pandemic and now her latest Chhori, an atmospheric horror film from director Vishal Furia is also set to stream on Amazon Prime Video. Nushrat shared her thoughts on films releasing directly on digital and how the medium was a boon for the industry going through theatrical shutdown.

He said, “The intention of any filmmaker or actor behind making a film is to reach out to the audience. If it is packaged in a box, it has no value. The product goes stale, people put off and the story becomes unrelated after a while. Due to the pandemic, theaters were closed and trust me, as an industry of actors, writers and directors, we were fortunate to have an OTT platform that gave us a second lease of life, including the movies we made, They could have been released. , I am glad that there was a platform to showcase our work and create jobs for the industry,” shared the actress.

In Chhori, Nushrat plays a pregnant woman whose biggest fear is her solitude in a dilapidated house in the middle of a sugarcane field. The film is a remake of the Marathi feature Lapachapi (2016) and paved the way for the actress to play a performance-centric role. Nushrat says that she loves doing offbeat and mainstream films, which include songs and dance.

“Every film has specific requirements. As a person, I am as huge as I am offbeat. I like to do all kinds of films. In fact, I don’t even separate or classify them. I see them as different stories that work for different audiences. When I hear the script of a film, I become the spectator and if I feel thrilled, I sign it. Be it romance, comedy or adventure, if you have expressed feelings and I enjoy it, then I have to do it. I enjoy singing and dancing. Music is a very integral part of my system, so of course, I will sing and glam because she is a part of me. At the same time, I also like to do things that I have not done before. I want to put myself out there and learn from my mistakes. Discovering myself as an actor is more for me. There is no other idea, design or plan behind it. There is no formula and every Friday the fate of the actor changes. I just keep working and enjoying and if it works, it works,” Nusrat said.

Sharing her experience of playing a pregnant woman in Chhori and finding her emotional connection and vulnerability in the character, the actress said, “Even after finishing the film, I don’t know if I will ever understand that as a mother. What does she do emotionally when she is giving birth to a child? Every woman has her own experience. I can only draw from the experiences of the people around me. I spoke to my friends, my mother and aunty who have been mothers and I have imbibed some of their feelings and experiences in this character. But those experiences were borrowed. I can’t say that this was my unique experience and expression because I have never been pregnant so it is impossible for me to understand the depth. I took from things around me and Vishal (Furia) sir helped me. I followed his instructions.”

On watching horror movies Nusrat said, “I watch all kinds of horror movies that come out or are suggested to me. Chucky Gudiya still gives me nightmares. I can’t keep a doll next to me. But I’m scared. So I hide behind blankets or scream in fear wherever I look. I’m afraid to go to bed alone at night and need my mother by my side.”
