Now, Bengal CM will replace Governor as Chancellor of Alia University

The West Bengal cabinet on Monday approved a proposal to replace the governor with the chief minister as the vice-chancellor of Aliya University, which comes under the jurisdiction of the state’s minority affairs and madrassa. education Department.

“Bills have already been passed in the state assembly to replace the governor with a chief minister for all state universities under the state’s education, agriculture and animal husbandry and fisheries science departments. Similarly, a bill has been passed to replace the governor with the education minister as the guest for private universities in the state. Somehow, the matter of Alia University was abandoned. Today the state cabinet also approved this. We will soon send the bill to the assembly,” said a member of the state cabinet.

As per the rules, the bills will go to the office of Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar for his approval. He will have three options – to give his consent, send it back to the state government for reconsideration or send it to the President as education is a subject in the Concurrent List.

Education Minister Bratya Basu, however, has said that if the governor does not give his assent to the bills, the state government will implement the change by bringing an ordinance.

Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, however, said he would go to any extent to stop the change. “I will request the governor to send the bill to the central government as education is in the concurrent list,” he said.

A large section of academicians and members of civil society have also criticized the decision to replace the governor with the chief minister as the chancellor of the state universities. Many of them were of the opinion that neither the Governor nor the Chief Minister, but eminent and acclaimed educationists should be appointed as the Chancellor.
