Noted South choreographer Kool Jayant passes away in Chennai

South’s famous choreographer Kool Jayant passed away on Wednesday morning at his home in West Mambalam, Chennai. Jayant was diagnosed with cancer. He was recovering initially but fell ill again and his condition worsened. He breathed his last on Wednesday morning.

Jayant made his debut as a choreographer in Tamil cinema in 1996 with the blockbuster action romance film Kadhal Desam. The film had chart-buster music by Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman.

Kool Jayant was a popular choreographer of Tamil cinema in the 90s. She also worked as a dancer in the dance troupe of actors Prabhu Deva and Raju Sundaram Master.

The sudden demise of Kool Jayant has shocked the entire Tamil film industry and many people have mourned his demise on social media. Legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja offered his condolences on Twitter.

Acclaimed Tamil director Cheran also paid tribute to the renowned choreographer.

Producer KT Kunujom, who introduced Kool Jayant in his film ‘Kadhal Desam’, has expressed grief over the demise of the choreographer.

In his career as a choreographer spanning 25 years, Kool Jayant acted in more than 500 films of South Indian cinema. He choreographed several hit songs by leading actors including Thalapathy Vijay, Ajith, Mammoty and Mohanlal among others.

He choreographed some of the biggest chart-buster songs in South Cinema. These include – ‘Mustafa Mustafa’ and ‘Kalluri Salai’ in Kadhal Desam, ‘Oh Maria’ in Kadhalar Dinam, ‘April Mathathil’ in Wali and ‘Mottu Ondru Malaranthida Markkum’ in Kushi.

The dance steps given by him are still imitated on stage in many films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada languages.
