NOTA Factor, Vote Margins & Ranking: As BJP’s Gujarat Gameplan Ticks the Right Boxes, Decoding Number Game

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) not only won a historic victory in Gujarat by winning 156 seats in the 182-member state assembly, but also broke a few more records in grabbing the bulk of the seats with huge margins. The margin of victory in Ghatlodiya and Choryasi two seats was close to two lakhs. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who won from Ghatlodiya seat for the second time in a row, defeated his nearest rival by 1.92 lakh votes. The margin of victory of BJP candidates in eight seats was between one lakh and one and a half lakh. These included Vatva, Olpad, Surat West, Manjalpur, Majura, Ellisbridge, Rajkot West and Valsad.

There were at least 15 seats where the victory margin was between 70,000 and 1 lakh. These included Maninagar, Kamrej, Pardi, Naroda, Naranpura, Bhavnagar Rural, Raopura, Gandevi, Bardoli, Akota, Daskroi, Navsari, Sabarmati, Sayajigunj and Vadodara city.

BJP is celebrating its success, News18 has a look at Gujarat election in numbers:

• In 102 out of 156 seats (65 per cent), BJP’s vote share is more than 50 per cent.

• AAP had more than 50 per cent vote share in one seat: Dediapada

• Congress secured more than 50 percent of the votes polled in two seats, Patan and Vansda.

• In three seats, the winners – all from the BJP – had a vote share of more than 80 percent: Ghatlodiya, Ellisbridge, and Majura

• Winner with highest vote percentage: Bhupendrabhai Rajnikant Patel (BJP) from Ghatlodiya (82.95 per cent)

• Highest margin of victory: Bhupendrabhai Rajnikant Patel (BJP) from Ghatlodiya defeating his nearest rival Dr Ami Yagnik (INC) by a margin of 1,92,263 votes (74.69 per cent polling);

• Narrowest margin of victory: Virendrasinh Bahadursinh Jadeja (BJP) over Bhachubhai Dharamshi Aarethiya (INC) in Rapar constituency (577 votes)

• Seats with victory margin above 1 lakh: 11, all won by BJP

• Seats with victory margin less than 1,000: Two (BJP 1, Congress 1)

Of all the 182 seats in Gujarat, Danilimda in Ahmedabad is the only assembly constituency where the Congress has got the maximum number of votes in the last five elections: 2022, 2017 and 2012 as well as in the 2019 and 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

• Congress candidates whose deposits were forfeited (received less than 1/6 or 16.66%) of the vote: 41/179 (22.9 percent)

• AAP candidates who lost their deposit (received less than 1/6 or 16.66% of the vote): 126/181 (69.6 percent)

• BJP candidates who lost their deposits (received less than 1/6 or 16.66% of votes): 0/182 (0 percent)

• AAP finished second on 35 seats

• AAP will win five seats in 2022. Of these, two seats were won by BJP in 2017, two by Congress and one by BTP.

Out of 39 seats where Congress lost, AAP got more votes than the margin of victory (AAP+Congress votes more than winner’s votes) in 39 seats.

• Out of 181 seats contested by the party, AAP got more than 50 per cent votes in 38 (21 per cent) seats.

• In 15 constituencies, NOTA got more votes than AAP: Abdasa, Rapar, Vav, Tharad, Dhanera, Radhanpur, Kheralu, Kalol, Khambhat, Borsad, Anklav, Matar, Padra, Wagra, Surat East

• In seven constituencies, NOTA got the third highest number of votes: Rapar, Tharad, Radhanpur, Kalol, Borsad, Anklav, Wagra

• Highest NOTA votes: 7,331 voters (3.56 per cent) opted for NOTA in Khedbrahma

• Lowest NOTA vote: In Karanj only 756 voters (0.85 per cent) opted for NOTA. The lowest turnout in percentage terms is Limbayat where 0.6 percent voters (1,069) chose NOTA.

• AIMIM got more votes than the margin of victory in Jamalpur-Khadia seat. However, that seat was won by Imran Khedawala of Congress.
