‘Not marriage but prostitution’: Muslim League leader’s remark against Kerala minister who is CM’s son-in-law

Indian Union Muslim League leader Abdu Rahman Kallayi has created widespread outrage with a hateful remark on the marriage of Kerala minister PA Mohammed Riyas. Without naming the Public Works Department (PWD) minister, Kallayi said, “The former national president of DYFI (Democratic Youth Federation of India) is the son-in-law of our area. who is his wife? Is this a marriage? This is prostitution.”

Riyas is married to Veena Vijayan, daughter of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Kallayi later expressed regret after his remarks sparked controversy. Issuing a statement, he said that his intention was not to hurt anyone personally, but only to show a religious outlook in his personal life.

The Muslim League leader made the controversial remark during a protest organized at the Kozhikode beach against the handing over of Waqf Board appointments in the state to the Public Service Commission (PSC).

After talks with leaders of Muslim body Samasta, the CM said this week that a final decision on the matter would be taken only after detailed discussions and till that time the existing arrangement would continue. The organization had also raised concerns about social media posts stating that non-Muslims would be posted in the Waqf Board. The Chief Minister had rubbished these rumours. Following this development, Samasta decided not to be a part of the protest.
