Tamil superstar Vikram starrer Thangalaan was released in theatres worldwide on August 15. It is directed by Pa Ranjith. Apart from Vikram, the film stars Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan and Daniel Caltagirone played prominent roles in the film. Thangalaan is based on the true events that revolve around the lives of mine workers in Kolar Gold Fields, Karnataka. With numerous twists and turns, the film ends on a good note with Vikram helping his community. Vikram’s performance as Thangalaan was widely appreciated by the critics and the audience. Malavika Mohanan as Aarthi in the film also left a mark on the viewers. However, do you know that Malavika Mohanan was not the first choice of Pa Ranjith in the film?

According to media reports, Pa Ranjith first approached Rashimka Mandanna for the role of Aarthi in the film. Before finalising Malavika Mohanan as Aarthi, Rashmika Mandanna refused to work on the film because she was not able to align the Thangalaan dates with her ongoing projects. She is currently working on the sequel of Pushpa. It is directed by Sukumar and stars Allu Arjun in the lead role. She will also be seen in the Salaman Khan starrer Sikandar.

On its opening Thursday, the film Thangalaan grossed Rs 12.6 crore at the box office. The movie was released in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. According to Sacnilk, the earnings were Rs 11 crore in Tamil, Rs 1.5 crore in Telugu and Rs 10 lakh in Malayalam. The reviews of the film are positive and are compared with Yash starrer KGF. The reason is that akin to the Kannada film franchise which revolved around gold hunting in the Kolar Gold Fields, Thangalaan has a similar theme.

The film is produced under the banner of Studio Green. Dhananjayan, the CEO of Studio Green – the producers – said that while the KGF films were fictional, certain elements from Thangalaan are based on real-life incidents.

Thangalaan, directed by Pa Ranjith, recorded an impressive overall occupancy rate of 71.64 per cent in Tamil shows. In Chennai alone, the film had 592 screenings, with an occupancy rate of 81.5 per cent.
