‘Not Just For 6-7 Months’: Manik Saha Says He Is BJP’s 2023 Tripura CM Face

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said he will be the face of the BJP in the next year’s assembly elections in the northeastern state. Addressing a rally on Sunday night, Saha said the entire country was watching the Town Bardowali Assembly bypoll where he is a candidate.

“I have not been made chief minister just for three months, six months or seven months… I will be the face of BJP in the crucial assembly elections next year. I know what that is,” he said. “We are not like migratory birds that land only during elections. I am close to every resident of Town Bardowali constituency as I was born and brought up here. As a sportsperson, a doctor and a professor, I have access to people from all walks of life in the region.”

Saha said that he saw the socio-economic condition of the people during the door-to-door campaign. “It’s really been a great experience for me.” Claiming that bypolls are being held across the country, Saha said that Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had won the bypoll by securing 93 per cent votes. “I have to get somewhere near that magical figure. I am really in a race. If I win it will be a victory of faith Prime Minister Narendra Modi And BJP president JP Nadda hit back at me,” he said.

Saha also shared his first interaction with the Prime Minister after being appointed as the Chief Minister. “When I first called Modi-ji as chief minister, he asked me if I was sleeping well. I said, you made me party president, which I did not ask for… You made me a Rajya Sabha MP, and now I am the chief minister! I am not feeling uncomfortable,” he told the rally.

Rajya Sabha MP Saha had replaced Biplab Kumar Deb as the chief minister of the state last month. On June 23, by-elections will be held for three more seats along with Town Bardowali. Counting of votes will take place on June 26.
