Kolkata: Heavy overnight rains due to low pressure over Bangladesh and West Bengal affected normal life in Kolkata and some southern districts of the state on Thursday, flooding low-lying areas.
The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rains in Kolkata till Friday morning. Incessant rains since Wednesday evening engulfed some main roads and low-lying areas of the city.

The port city of East Medinipur, Haldia received 216 mm of rain, while Canning in South 24 Parganas received 186 mm of rainfall, the Met department said.
Kolkata recorded 76 mm of rain during this period, while the adjoining Salt Lake received 50 mm of rain.
The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places in North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram and Howrah districts till Friday morning.
Hooghly, Bankura, Purulia, Purba and Paschim Bardhaman will also receive heavy to very heavy rains till Friday.
In the western part of the state, there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rains in Purulia district till Saturday morning.
The Meteorological Department said that heavy rains would continue in North and South 24 Parganas, Bankura, Paschim Bardhaman and Paschim Medinipur districts till Saturday morning.
Due to heavy rains, the water level of rivers may rise and there may be waterlogging in low-lying areas in the southern districts of the state.
