Nonprofit teams up with Southwest to give plane seats a second life – Henry Club

Nashville, Tenn. (WTVF) — A Partnerships with Southwest Airlines and turnip green creative reuse Started last year with the goal of keeping waste out of landfills and has already repurposed thousands of pounds of leather seats.

Leah Sherry, executive director of Turnip Green, says partnering with the airline felt like a natural fit because they’ve been in the content re-purpose business for 11 years.

“So there’s a lot of thrift stores and recycling centers where people can pick up a bunch of stuff, but there’s also a lot of stuff that doesn’t have a home, and you know like a lot of teachers, creative people that you know someone. Could use it outside but where it goes is turnip green,” said Sherry.

Ellen Schlabach helps lead the program and says she’s also partnered with Metro Nashville Public Schools to help students learn how to use reused leather.

“We’ve distributed over a thousand art kits since March last year and it has everything students need to be mobile,” Schlabach said.

The purpose of the partnership is to protect the environment and give a second life to things.

“It’s more than a seat. It’s an opportunity for environmentalism, for the arts, for job creation, for community building, so I love to see where it is and I can’t wait to see it.” That’s where it goes,” said Sherry.

He hopes the project will inspire others to upcycle, he says.

“When you look at the massive amount of goods that end up in landfills and you consider that those items can be reused in this program it really shows that and is an example to other organizations and other individuals.” gives,” Schlabach said.
