The lawyer demanded that the SHO of the second phase police station and sub-inspector Arvind Kumar be suspended and an FIR be registered against them.
The sub-inspector had allegedly detained Mahesh Nagar (38) when he was returning home from Noida.
While the police said that Nagar was quite drunk and was driving his car in an inebriated state, the lawyers said that a sub-inspector allegedly slapped Nagar repeatedly and his phone was snatched.
Manoj Bhati, president of Gautam Budh Nagar Bar Association, said that Nagar was repeatedly slapped and locked in the lockup.
“The lawyer was slapped by the SI and put in lock-up. If he was intoxicated then action should have been taken against him under relevant sections. Medical examination should have been done. How can they beat up someone like this?” He said the SHO of the second phase was acting “unrestrained”.
“When lawyers are not safe in the commissionerate system, what will be the condition of the common man,” Bhati asked.
After a three-hour long protest by lawyers and an argument with a brigade of police officers, including additional DCPs and ACPs, the police asked a representative group of lawyers to come to the office for talks.
However, when the group wanted to meet the Commissioner of Police, they were asked to meet Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Luv Kumar instead.
The meeting between Kumar, Additional DCP (Noida) Ranvijay Singh, Additional DCP (Central Noida) Ankur Agarwal and lawyers lasted for about an hour but both the sides failed to reach a solution.
“The police commissioner has not even met us. We met the Additional Commissioner of Police. The police is adamant on not taking any action against the concerned police officers. We have called a meeting of the Bar Association at Surajpur Court premises on Wednesday, where we will decide the future of our protest.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Luv Kumar said that he has directed that an inquiry should be ordered into the incident.
“According to the second phase police, the lawyer was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and was not assaulted. An inquiry has been ordered, which will be done by ACP level officers of other areas. Action can be taken after the inquiry report is received.
