However, soon after his transfer, there were reports that the jail superintendent was taking steps to prevent malpractice inside the prison.
“The jail superintendent was involved in weakening several members of the gang sitting inside the jail. For example, in the case of cheating of crores of rupees in the bike bot, the accused lodged inside the Luxor Jail and the members of Sunder Bhati gang and other gangs etc. were being made to live separately. Earlier, many of them were held together,” a source in Luxor Jail told TOI.
Along with this, strict security arrangements have been made, examples of which have already come to the fore. Holi, due to which some complaints were being made against Mukund as “some people were not happy”.
Ahead of Holi, jail authorities had seized 450 grams of bhang in small packets of salty and crunchy snacks from inside the Laksar jail, which a prisoner had bid to possibly distribute to the inmates during Holi celebrations inside the jail.
In addition, checking inside the jail was increased and a mobile phone was recovered from the possession of a woman home guard during the checking of women inmates and staff in the jail in April, following which a woman home guard and the prisoner were booked under section FIR was registered. 42 of the Prisons Act.
“Some of the steps did not go down well with the attitude of some people,” the jailer told TOI.
An illegal extortion racket operating inside the premises of Greater Noida Jail came to light after it was revealed that the relatives of some prisoners were asked to pay money in return for illegitimate “amenities” inside the jail.
Based on the complaint of two prisoners, an FIR has been lodged at Ecotech I police station at the behest of the jailer.
According to the FIR lodged with TOI, two inmates, identified as Amanpreet of Ludhiana and Harendra of Harendra of Dadri, allegedly complained to the Laxor jailer about an extortion racket being run from inside the jail.
The two prisoners alleged that during the time of Covid, their relatives who used to visit them were asked to deposit money in the Paytm account of Rohit Bansal, the owner of kirana store, whose store is located in Birondi village of Greater Noida.
Ajay Pratap Singh, Jail Superintendent of Kanpur Dehat, has not been posted as Superintendent of Luksar Jail.
