No proposal to extend deadline for filing income tax returns: Government

New Delhi: The Central government on Friday said that there is no proposal to extend the date for filing Income Tax (IT) returns.

Friday 31st December 2021 is the last date to file Income Tax Returns.

Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj said during the press conference that the work of filing income tax returns is going on smoothly. “Till 3 pm today, a total of 5.62 crore returns have been filed. More than 20 lakh returns were filed today. 60 lakh more returns have been filed this year.”

At the press meet, Nirmala Sitharaman, who was present, said, “The GST Council meeting has decided to maintain the status quo on the GST rate on textiles to 5 per cent and not to increase it to 12 per cent. The issue of GST rate on textiles will be referred to the Tax Rate Rationalization Committee which will submit its report by February. “GST rates on textiles is a complicated matter.

Sitharaman, in response to a question on IT raids in Kanpur, said law enforcing agencies work on actionable intelligence in conducting raids. “Today’s income tax raids (on properties of perfume dealers and SP MLC Pushpraj Jain and others) are also being conducted on the basis of actionable intelligence. Today’s IT raids are revealing unrelated material,” the minister said.

He responded to allegations of searches of properties of fragrance dealers in UP’s Kanpur and Unnao. Taking a jibe at Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, the minister said, “Raids were conducted at the right places… Is former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav scared and scared by these discoveries?”

“He (SP chief) should not raise doubts about the professionalism of the organisation. The height of the (confiscated) cash is proof that law enforcement agencies are acting honestly… should we do it after the election? Should we wait for the ‘muhurta’ or catch the thief today?,” Sitharaman said.
