No pretense of lakhs for lakes

bbmp The maintenance of the lakes costs a lot of money, but the contractors are not interested in monitoring the work, even though the condition of the lakes is deteriorating.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is spending lakhs of rupees for the maintenance of lakes in the city, but given the pathetic condition of several reservoirs, there is nothing to show for the expenditure.

Residents of the areas around the lakes say that the BBMP is not inclined to oversee the maintenance of the lakes. He said that the authorities select only contractors for the maintenance of the lakes but do not check whether the contractors are maintaining it well or not.

To describe: The BBMP Lake Department 2,77,335 for maintenance of Mallathahalli lake in 2016-17 and no amount in 2017-18, and amount for maintenance of Mallathahalli lake increased 10 times to Rs 10,40,035 in 2018-19, Rs 11,98,390 in 2019-20 in and in 2020-21 Rs 8,55,525. For the last three years, the contractor is only one person – Shivanna. Narasimharaju Mariyappa in 2016-17. What is surprising is that the maintenance cost has increased five-fold in four years.

“I had visited Mallathahalli lake a few months back. I have not engaged any employee to maintain the lake. Weeds and unhygienic environment are indicators of poor maintenance of the lake,” said Sai Duttawho obtained data from BBMP on funds spent for maintenance of lakes in the city during the last five years. Residents of Mallathahalli and surrounding areas confirmed that this was indeed the case. He said that not many laborers are engaged in cleaning the garbage from the bottom of the lake. “The BBMP may have engaged workers to remove weeds and hyacinths for a few months. The amount spent for the maintenance of the lake is huge,” said a resident, pleading anonymity.

The BBMP may put up a board with all the details on the money spent for the maintenance of the lake and the name and phone number of the contractor. As per the High Court order, the BBMP should ensure the participation of the residents in the maintenance of the lake

The next example is of Halasuru Lake. BBMP had tied up with Prestige Group Four years ago for the beautification of Halasuru Lake. The name boards of the Prestige Group have been seen on the lake. However, the BBMP spent Rs 41,19,795 for the maintenance of Halasuru Lake for 2020-21. “The BBMP may put up a board with all the details on the money spent for the maintenance of the lake and the name and phone number of the contractor. According to high Court Order, BBMP should ensure participation of residents in the maintenance of the lake,” said V Ramprasad, Co-Founder friends of the lakes.

Expressing surprise over the BBMP’s claim that Rs 41,19,795 was spent for the maintenance of Halasuru Lake, V Puru-Shotham, a member of Halasuru Rising, said that he was never aware of any work done by the BBMP in the lake. “Half of the lake including the islands is maintained by Madras Engineer Group (mega) The other part of the lake, especially the pedestrian path and the lake bed, is maintained by the Prestige Group,” said Purushottam.

BBMP Chief Engineer (Lake) Mohan Krishna said that labor wages are the main component in the maintenance expenses of the lakes. “We need at least four laborers for the maintenance of the lake. We have to pay at least Rs 500 per day to each laborer. Other expenses are towards removing silt from drains that carry water to lakes and removing hyacinths and weeds. Maintenance of lakes is an important task. Without development of only one lake there is no purpose of maintenance,” Mohan Krishna said.
