No positive effect of child spanking: Report

It is no secret that children are highly receptive to their environment. They absorb things much faster than anyone.

However, some parents have a habit of thrashing their child after doing something silly or wrong. But a study has revealed that physical punishment such as spanking can worsen children’s behavior.

Beating them doesn’t improve anything. On the flipside, they can be violent. This has been claimed in a study report published in the British medical magazine ‘The Lancet’. The study was conducted in 69 countries including the US, Canada, China, Japan and the UK.

Elizabeth Gershoff, senior author of the study, said, “corporal punishment impairs children’s development and well-being. There is a misconception that spanking will improve children. It can make them worse. Our study found clear evidence. “

Corporal punishment has been included in the study. Corporal punishment includes hitting a child with an object, slapping the face or ear, throwing an object at them, punching them and hitting them with the feet.

This also included threatening them with a knife or a gun. The consequences of beating are not pleasant. Some children become violent and aggressive, while others become antisocial. Children also have difficulty developing cognitive skills.

Corporal punishment illegal in 62 countries

According to the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children, corporal punishment is illegal in 62 countries around the world. At the same time, 27 countries are committed to preventing corporal punishment of children.

31 countries still allow parents to “legally” beat their children. A 2017 UNICEF report said that 250 million children between the ages of two and four live in countries where disciplined spanking is considered legal.
