No one understands Punjab better than Amarinder, Congress United: Manish Tewari

Congress MP Manish Tewari on Wednesday rubbished speculations of a rift within the Congress unit in Punjab and said the Congress party is “absolutely united” and will address members’ suggestions on how to plan for the state by 2022. A three-member committee was constituted. Assembly elections.

In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18, Tiwari said that the Congress unit in Punjab is unified. “There are some people who have a definite view on how we should go in the 2022 elections and for this a three-member committee was formed,” he said.

Tiwari’s remarks came amid a growing rift between Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu. The former Punjab minister has a tussle with the chief minister and has attacked him over alleged delay in justice in the 2015 Kotkapura sacrilege and subsequent police firing incidents. The Chief Minister had criticized Sidhu for repeatedly attacking him on the issue of sacrilege and termed Sidhu’s anger as “complete indiscipline”.

The three-member panel was constituted by the Congress to resolve the infighting within the state unit of the party. Singh had appeared before a panel headed by Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge in Delhi on June 22. However, he returned to Chandigarh without an audience accompanied by party president Sonia Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi.

Amid speculations, Tiwari clarified that he was not “summoned” at the panel but was actually requested to appear. “Captain Amarinder Singh was not born yesterday, there is probably no one to understand Punjab better than him,” he said. The COVID situation in Punjab is “better managed” under the leadership of the Chief Minister.

Tiwari further said that in the next phase of the Congress government’s second term, “you will see a revivalist Congress and a resurgent opposition,” which is ready to defend the “founding idea of India”.

The remarks came hours after Sidhu met party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Reports said the leaders met to discuss their role in reforming the party’s state unit ahead of the assembly elections. Rahul Gandhi has been meeting party leaders in Punjab for their views on the political situation and the steps needed to strengthen the party ahead of the 2022 elections.
