No foreign funding for around 6,000 entities including IIT Delhi, IMA without FCRA license

New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, Jamia Millia Islamia, Indian Medical Association and Nehru Memorial Museum and Library are among around 6,000 institutions whose registration for the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act expired on Saturday.

These entities either did not apply for renewal of their FCRA licenses or their applications were rejected by the Union Home Ministry, PTI told officials.

According to the data uploaded on the website of the Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday, the total number of NGOs in the non-active or living category has come down from 22,762 to 16,829 till Saturday.

In the list updated on January 1, the registration of NGOs has either been canceled or they have not applied for renewal.

“Sufficient time was given to the NGOs, but they failed to update. Even after the extension was given, some NGOs did not apply,” sources in the MHA, reported ANI.

The list of registered associations deemed closed has a total of 12,580 (the validity of the certificate has expired). FCRA registration is mandatory for receiving foreign funds.

Earlier on Friday, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had extended the validity of FCRA registration of those NGOs which were expiring between September 29, 2020 and September 30, 2021 till March 31, 2022.

As on January 1, 5,933 were added to the updated list of NGOs whose registration was “expired or deemed to have expired” on the MHA website.

Earlier, 6,587 NGOs were already on the list.

There are total 16,829 NGOs active under FCRA. 20,675 NGOs are in the canceled category, which means they cannot receive or use any foreign funds.

Mahatma Gandhi Yuvajan Sangathan, Asha Kiran Rural Educational Development Society, Chaitanya Grameen Dev Elopement Society, International Animal and Bird Welfare Society, Kranti Society, Mitraniketan; Jhansi Mahila Mandali and KS Naidu Education Society are also among those whose registration is believed to be forfeited.
