No evidence found for sacrilege, FIR will be amended: Punjab CM Channi on Kapurthala lynching

New Delhi: Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Friday said that the incident in Kapurthala, where a man was lynched to death for an alleged sacrilege attempt at a gurdwara, will be amended as the FIR is now under investigation. Till now no evidence has been found.

“In Kapurthala, no evidence (found) that sabotage was done. The matter is being investigated… the FIR will be amended.

The man was lynched earlier on Sunday at a gurdwara in Kapurthala, allegedly for attempted sacrilege.

This came a day after another man was lynched for allegedly attempting to desecrate the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

Hitting out at the ruling Congress government in Punjab, Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal earlier in the day alleged a conspiracy behind the recent cases of sacrilege and blasts.

He said, ‘Punjab has a weak government. They (leaders of the ruling party) are fighting amongst themselves. Punjab needs an honest strong government which can take action against those involved in the conspiracies.

Such incidents will keep happening till a strong government is formed, Kejriwal reaches out to the people promising an honest, strong and stable government which will arrest the culprits.

The AAP chief, who was in Chandigarh, further said that the person who tried to sabotage the Golden Temple must have been sent by some influential person to stir up tension.

Stating that several cases of sacrilege have been reported in the last five years, the AAP chief said the weak government has failed to break the ruling Punjab whip.

Criticizing the ruling party over the drug menace in Punjab, Kejriwal said the Congress had promised to wipe out the mafia within a month of forming the government during the last election campaign.

“An FIR has been registered during five years and Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and State Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu are boasting over it,” he said.

The AAP chief also termed the drug case against former minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLA Bikram Singh Majithia as a political stunt.
