No difference between us: Punjab CM’s brother after filing nomination as independent

Punjab Assembly Election 2022: Dr. Manohar Singh Bassi, brother of Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, will contest from Pathana seat as an independent candidate.

He filed his nomination as an independent candidate on Friday.

Manohar Singh Bassi was seeking Congress ticket from Pathana. However, in the first list of candidates, Congress has nominated party MLA Gurpreet Singh GP from the assembly seat.

After filing the nomination, Dr Manohar Singh said: “I will contest the election independently from Bassi Pathana. I made sure that there is no mention of my brother’s name in my poster, but some people did not mention my brother’s name with me. The banner was created using this, not the differences between me and my brother”, reported news agency ANI.

Manohar Singh on deciding to contest as an independent candidate

Earlier, Manohar Singh had termed the Congress party’s decision to give ticket to Gurpreet Singh GP as injustice to the people of the area. He had said that many prominent people of Bassi Pathana had advised him to contest as an independent candidate.

Manohar Singh had earlier told news agency PTI, “Many prominent people of Bassi Pathana region have asked me to fight as an independent and I will go by what they have said. There is no chance of going back and I will I will definitely contest the election.” ,

Manohar Singh had resigned from the post of Senior Medical Officer, Civil Hospital, Kharar in August last year. Singh has done MBBS and MD. He also has a master’s degree in journalism and has studied law.

Manohar Singh had said that he has decided to contest the election as an independent after meeting several councillors, village sarpanch and panchs.

Manohar Singh said, “People told me that giving him (Gurpreet Singh GP) ticket was wrong. He had done nothing earlier and now he has been imposed again.”

Reportedly, the brother of the Punjab Chief Minister was denied ticket as the Congress decided to adopt the formula of ‘one family one ticket’.

Assembly elections in Punjab will be held in one phase on February 20. Counting of votes will take place on March 10.
