There is good news for bank customers who do not have a debit card but have Aadhaar, the government has allowed a facility that allows such people to activate the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) soon. The service was supposed to start from Monday, but reports said it should be delayed as banks were not ready for it.

Getting UPI Services Through Aadhaar Those who do not have a debit card will benefit. Many senior citizens in India do not have a debit card, but with the changing times they have to adapt to online modes of payment – especially after three waves of the pandemic that has digitized the entire world.

Delay in Aadhar UPI Activation

In September last year, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) was the first to announce the mechanism for activating UPI through Aadhaar. However, since that announcement, banks and other stakeholders have delayed UPI Aadhaar activation several times. The deadline was extended from 15 December 2021 to 15 March 2022.

“Aadhaar OTP authentication in lieu of debit card for onboarding customer on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to enable customer on boarding on UPI using Aadhaar OTP, other than debit cards. Compliance timeline, with feature details and guidelines The mention was made as of 15 December 2021. Due to delay in readiness for other priority product feature launch in the ecosystem, the compliance deadline has been extended to 15 March 2022,” NPCI had said last year.

“However, this will be possible only if the UPI application is used on the same mobile which has an Aadhaar-registered mobile number and the same number is registered with the bank. NPCI had initially asked banks to comply by December 15, 2021. But delays in preparation had given priority to other product features, with the deadline extended to March 15, 2022.

Currently, most banks demand customers to download their mobile application and activate UPI through a debit card. This means that only those having access to digital bank services can use the UPI facility. Many rural people, who have a bank account, still do not have a debit card and hence cannot avail this facility at present. However, UPI Aadhaar activation can help them make the payment system easier.

How to Activate UPI through Aadhaar

The new facility will completely do away with the need for a debit card. It will get your data from UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) when you give your Aadhaar number while registering yourself for UPI.

After entering your Aadhaar number, you will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number. However, this number should be the same as that registered in your bank account. After entering the OTP, your details will be verified and after successful verification, you can avail the services.
