No compensation, no record of deaths during farmers’ protest: Center tells Parliament

Amid protests by Akali Dal-led opposition parties inside and outside Parliament against the three agricultural laws and advocating the cause of farmers’ protests, the Center said no compensation would be given to the families of farmers killed during the protests. is.

The Indian government, in a written reply, said it had “no such record” when asked whether it was aware that several agitating farmers were killed or fell ill during the agitation that has been going on for months. It said therefore there was no proposal for compensation also. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said, “However, the Government of India, during discussions with farmers’ unions, appealed to them that children and elderly people, especially women, be allowed to go home in view of the cold and COVID conditions.”

A central government official told News18 that since law and order and police are state subjects, the Center would not have a record of such deaths. However, this matter has taken a political color before the Punjab elections. Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Badal said on July 9 that over 550 farmers were killed during the agitation and that if the SAD comes to power, it will give government jobs, their children and grandchildren to each such farmer’s family member. Will give free education till later- graduation and family health insurance cover.

The Congress government in Punjab had earlier announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of each deceased farmer, and Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh said last week that 191 such families had already received the money. He had said that the Chief Minister had also promised jobs to the families of such farmers and the process was on.

Meanwhile, the Center said that it is always ready for discussions with farmers’ unions. “The government is engaged in serious, sensitive and active discussions with farmer unions to resolve the issues. During the various rounds of deliberations, the Government has repeatedly urged the farmers’ unions to discuss the provisions of the agricultural laws, so that if any provision is objected, progress can be made towards their resolution. But the farmer unions only insisted on repeal of agricultural laws,” Tomar said in his reply.
