BJP leader Dilip Ghosh told News18 on Friday that his term as the party’s West Bengal unit chief will end in December 2022, amid speculation he will replace Lok Sabha MP Dr Sukanta Majumdar. The names of some senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, including Majumdar and Debashree Chowdhury, have been tossed in the political circles over the past few weeks and by the media as possible candidates to take over from Ghosh against the backdrop of the party’s defeat. April-May assembly elections.
When contacted, Dr Sukanta Majumdar said, “I am not aware of any such development. I think it would be unfair to make any comment based on speculation.”
Majumdar was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2019 as a member of the BJP from Balurghat constituency in Dakshin Dinajpur district of West Bengal. She defeated Arpita Ghosh of Trinamool Congress by a margin of 33,293 votes.
Speaking to News18, Dilip Ghosh, who is also the Lok Sabha MP from Medinipur, said, “Not only him (Muzumdar’s), there are many names that are being discussed as the next BJP president in Bengal. I would like to clarify that in the last one month I have not spoken to my party’s national president JP Nadda ji. Also, I have not suggested anyone’s name. As far as I know, my term (as state BJP president), as well as Nadda ji’s term (as BJP national president) will end in December 2022. So now there is no question of any ‘Parivartan’ (change).”
The other name is that of the party’s Bengal unit general secretary Debashree Chowdhury, who was made minister of state for women and child development in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet in 2019 but was dropped during a reshuffle last month. He has a strong RSS footprint as his father Devi Das Choudhary was the President of Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) at Balurghat in the then undivided Dinajpur district from 1967 to 1980.
Debashree has declined to comment on speculation on multiple occasions.
