NITK, Surathkal makes Covid insurance a must for students | Mangaluru News – Times of India

Mangaluru: Premier technical institute NITK, Surathkalhas made Covid-19 insurance mandatory for all studentsincluding PhD scholars,
According to institution officials, health insurance will come into aid in case of unforeseen circumstances when a student is infected with Covid-19. Meanwhile, in medical colleges, the same facility is provided through its existing insurance.
Narendranath S, dean of student affairs, NITK, Surathkal, said the institution has made mandatory covid-19 insurance for all students at the institution. “All the students are required to produce Covid-19 insurance along with other documents to enter the campus from this academic year. Those who have already purchased the policy can produce the same to enter campus. It was made so that students are on the safer side if they are infected and require hospitalisation. The Covid insurance reduces the burden of paying hospital bills,” said Narendranath.
Since the pandemic outbreak, the campus with about 6,000 students has reported several Covid-19 cases among students, staff, and non-teaching staff. In the third wave, more than 100 persons from the institution were infected. Narendranath said that only two students with mild symptoms were hospitalised.
At colleges offering health related courses, Covid-19 is covered in the existing health insurance. For example, Kasturba Medical College and Manipal College of Dental Sciences Mangaluru has ‘medicare’ insurance which now covers Covid-19 hospitalization charges as well. It is part of the fee structure. Dr B Unnikrishnan, dean, Kasturba Medical College said that earlier ‘medicare’ covered medical expenses of students which is now extended to Covid-19 hospitalisation as well.
