Nitish Kumar’s close aide Lalan Singh elected JDU’s national president, RCP Singh stepped down

Bihar’s ruling Janata Dal (United) on Saturday appointed Munger MP Lalan Singh as the party’s national president. The move was necessitated after JD(U) chief RCP Singh was included in the recently amended. Narendra Modi The cabinet resigned from the post. There was a change of guard at the party office in Delhi.

This is the first time in the 18-year history of the JD(U) that an upper caste leader has been given the command of the party at the national level. This is also after the party fell to the third position in the state after last year’s assembly elections. The decision to select Lalan Singh is considered as a step to reach out to the upper castes in the state. In the last assembly elections, the party not only slipped to the third position, it also finished second in the NDA alliance for the first time as the BJP won more seats than the JD(U). Party insiders believe that the upper castes did not support the party as much as the coalition partners.

Since its formation on 30 October 2003, the JD(U) has had three presidents, all from the OBC community. Earlier JD(U) president Sharad Yadav belonged to the Yadav community and Nitish Kumar and RCP Singh belonged to the Kurmi community in Bihar.

The JD(U) has been a part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Center and in the state, except from June 2013 to August 2017.

Notably, after the end of the Lalu Prasad-led RJD regime in 2005, Bihar has always had a JD(U) chief minister. At present, the JD(U) has 16 Lok Sabha MPs and 43 MLAs in the Bihar Legislative Assembly. The party’s only minister in the Modi cabinet is RCP Singh.

Who is Lalan Singh?

Lalan Singh is an MP from the Munger parliamentary constituency of Bihar. He was also the state president of JD(U) and served as a minister in the state government. He is considered very close to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. After RCP Singh became a minister in the Modi government, it was expected that the JD(U) would elect a new president and the decision to elect Lalan Singh as the chief was taken in the presence of Nitish Kumar in the party’s national executive.
