Nitin Gadkari asks Amazon to stop selling seatbelt alarm blockers after Cyrus Mistry’s fatal accident – Times of India

The Government of India has asked Amazon, an online retail giant to stop selling seatbelt alarm blockers, according to Reuters.
The sale of metal clips is legal, but such devices have recently come into the spotlight after Cyrus Mistery’s death in a road accident last weekend.
According to various media reports, Cyrus Mistry was not wearing a seat belt that raises the road safety issue in the Indian car market.
In an interview, Union Minister, Nitin Gadkari said that the metal chips that are available on Amazon are used in the seat belt slots to silent the alarm that continues to ping till the seatbelts are not used while driving a car.
He further added, “People buy clips from Amazon to evade wearing seatbelts. We have sent a notice to Amazon to stop (selling these).”
The online retail giant, Amazon didn’t respond to the mail immediately. Continuing the discussion, Nitin Gadkari said that accidents killed around 1,50,000 people across the country in 2021. Last year, the World Bank said that India had a death on its roads every four minutes.
The country has plans to make seat belt alarms mandatory for rear seats, said Union Minister, Nitin Gadkari.
On Wednesday, Amazon’s India website had several listings for small metal clips that can eliminate seat belt alarm noise across different car models. Those devices were available at a price of Rs 249.
