In NIRF, Indian institutions such as IITs and IIMs are usually ranked top, but when it comes to foreign rankings such as Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) or Times Higher education (d) Ranking, even the best Indian institutes are low. Former IIT Delhi director V Ramgopal Rao had earlier said that institutes like IIT Delhi have “Perfect Place” in the Global Top 50 But the reason behind this is a parameter known as the ‘perception’ index. But the Indian rankings will also be perceived by NIRF as one of the major para meters this year.

QS Ranking Parameters

When it comes to QS, there are five parameters on which universities are ranked. It includes academic reputation which accounts for 40 percent of the overall score, and teaching and research quality, refers to employer reputation which assesses how institutions prepare students for successful careers, faculty/student ratio which it assesses. how institutions provide students with meaningful access to lecturers and tutors, citations per faculty that measure university research quality with the per-faculty metric, and the International Student Ratio and International Faculty Ratio Which depends on the University’s ability to attract quality students and staff from around the world, which influences its global outlook.

Parameter Ranking

The performance indicators are divided into five areas – teaching (learning environment), research (volume, income and reputation), citation (research impact), international outlook (staff, students and research), and industry income (knowledge transfer). ). While each of the first three parameters has a weightage of 30 percent, the international outlook (staff, students, research) has a weighting of 7.5 percent, and industry income has a 2.5 percent weighting.

Perception Index in NIRF

For NIRF, out of the total 100 per cent, 30 per cent weightage is given to teaching, learning and resources and research and professional practice. While 20 percent is given to graduation outcomes, 10 percent to outreach and inclusivity and perception.

The Perception Index, also known as PR, refers to academic peers and employers. The official information brochure said, “This is to be done through a survey conducted on a large range of academicians to ascertain their preference for a wide range of employers, professionals from reputed organizations and graduates of various institutions. ” A comprehensive list is prepared keeping in view the various sectors, regions etc. For universities in the PR parameter, 70 per cent weightage is given to equivalence and 30 per cent for accreditation.
