GUWAHATI: A woman was killed and several others are missing after a private motorized country boat going from Majuli Island in Assam’s Jorhat district to Nimatighat rammed into a larger boat coming from the opposite direction on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident happened around 4.15 pm. “Ma Kamala”, the country boat that sank, was going from Nimatighat in Jorhat to Majuli and another boat, “Tripkai”, was coming from Majuli and headed towards Nimatighat.
Boats run by government and private parties are the lifeline for the islanders. Privately operated boats do not issue any tickets and hence they count the passengers traveling. Sarma said the boat was found in an upturned position at the bottom of the river, but due to the strong current of the river, divers could not search inside the boat to find any trapped person. “Now we will completely cut the boat to conduct a search operation under the overturned boat,” he said.
