Norwegian ambassador alleges ‘factual inaccuracies’ in Rani Mukherjee’s Mrs Chatterjee v Norway. Producer Nikhil Advani’s reaction

Nikhil Advani, the producer of Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway, has reacted to Norwegian Ambassador to India Hans Jacob Friedenlund’s allegations that Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway shows ‘factual inaccuracies’. The filmmaker alleged on Twitter that the ambassador ‘warned’ two women at the screening.

“Guests are like God! India has a cultural mandate. This is what our elders have taught every Indian. Last evening we hosted the Norwegian Ambassador and volunteered to show him our film Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway. After the screening, I sat quietly watching him scold two strong women who have chosen to tell this important story. I was silent because like Sagarika Chakraborty, they don’t need me to fight for them and ‘culturally’ we don’t disrespect our guests. As far as clarification is concerned. Video attached,” wrote Nikhil.

The video featured Sagarika Chakraborty, on whose life the film is based, saying that the ambassador spoke about her case ‘without decency’. She also revealed that the Norwegian government ‘continues to spread lies’ about her.

In his op-ed for the Indian Express, Jacob wrote that Mrs Chatterjee v Norway contained ‘factual inaccuracies’ and the story a ‘fictional representation of the case’. He shared his article on Twitter and wrote about the film, “It unfairly reflects Norway’s belief in family life and our respect for different cultures. Child welfare is a matter of great responsibility, which is never motivated by payment or profit. #NorwayCares.”

He wrote, “It’s hard not to be impressed given Rani Mukerji’s acting prowess, and moviegoers may think of Norway as an uncaring country. But as the Norwegian ambassador to India, for me the official Norwegian perspective It is important to present and correct the factual inaccuracies that this film unfortunately portrays. The case from which the film is inspired was resolved a decade ago with the cooperation of the Indian authorities and an agreement between all parties involved. The film is a fictional representation of the case.”

Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway stars Rani Mukerji as an Indian mother whose children are taken from her by the Norwegian authorities. Based on Sagarika Chakraborty’s book The Journey of a Mother, the film is directed by Ashima Chibber and also stars Neena Gupta, Jim Sarbh and Anirban Bhattacharya in key roles.
