A special NIA court on Thursday dismissed the plea of ​​Elgar Parishad-Maoist link case accused Gautam Navlakha and Sagar Gorkha, seeking permission to use mosquito nets in jail. Navlakha, Gorkha and other accused in this case are currently lodged in Taloja Jail in Navi Mumbai.

He had moved the court after the mosquito net was snatched by the jail authorities. Prison officials told the court that it was risky to allow inmates to use mosquito nets as they could be used by someone to strangle themselves or others. Special Judge Rajesh Kataria dismissed the petition of the accused but allowed them to use mosquito repellent, ointment and incense.

The judge also directed the jail superintendent to take necessary measures to keep mosquitoes away, including taking out unwanted plants. The court said that spraying of anti-mosquito insecticides and fumigation should be done from time to time and this should be done every fortnight during the rainy season.

The case against Navlakha and other arrested accused pertains to the Elgar Parishad conference held in Pune on December 31, 2017. The police had alleged that the event was funded by Maoists.
