NFT gets star power

Celebrities and Bollywood celebrities are joining the NFT bandwagon, with many selling their digital collectibles through NFT auctions.

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have become a rage among investors, mostly at auctions of art in the digital space. NFTs are digital assets that represent ‘unique’ items such as art, music, in-game items and videos that can be purchased as collectibles using cryptocurrencies. In February, a digital version of the famous Nyan Cat meme was sold for 300 Ethereum (approximately Rs 10.4 crore). Nyan Cat is a YouTube video, originally uploaded in April 2011, that became a viral Internet meme.

In October, fashion designer Manish Malhotra partnered with the WazirX NFT marketplace and sold five of his NFT creations, including two sketches and a GIF, within seconds of launch. Kamal Haasan and Sunny Leone have also stepped on the Metaverse bandwagon by launching digital memorabilia through NFTs. “I am excited to explore the emerging intersection of the digital and physical worlds, now becoming popularly known as the metaverse,” Haasan said in a press statement.

In November, actor Amitabh Bachchan auctioned his NFT collection, Madhushala– Compilation of poetry written by his late father, poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and recorded in the actor’s own voice. According to GuardianLink, the R&D technology firm that operated Bachchan’s NFT launch, the auction fetched a total of $966,000 (about Rs 7.18 crore). “In this world of digitization, NFT has opened up a whole new range of opportunities to engage with my fans,” says Bachchan.

Recently, singer Sonu Nigam collaborated with JetSynthesys, a digital entertainment and technology company, to launch an NFT series that features the lyrics of his popular songs handwritten by him in his diary as well as his first English song. .

More and more actors are supporting crypto platforms like Salman Khan (for short video app spark’s crypto token $GARI), Ayushmann Khurrana (CoinDCX) and Ranveer Singh (CoinSwitchKuber). On 10 November, Khan announced on Twitter that he would soon be launching his own NFTs in partnership with Bollycoin.
