New malware masquerading as crypto wallet could steal money from Android and iOS devices

Mobile users have another malware alert this week, and it’s on the App Store masquerading as a crypto wallet and capable of stealing your money. With crypto apps becoming popular over the past year, attackers have found a perfect target to use and lure in users. According to a security report from ESET, crypto apps infected with malware have been discovered in the Android and iOS app stores.

The report states that the attackers are eyeing any user who has a smartphone and is using English as their language, which number can be in the millions, to be honest. Researchers first heard about the malware-ridden wallet in May last year.

The sophistication of this attack surprised ESET researchers, who became aware of their intentions after a different method was used to attack Android and iOS users. For Android, ESET says, the attackers targeted newcomers to the crypto wallet world. The malware’s design within the app means that users or the Play Store are unable to detect any malicious nature of the app, and let it go through the download process. With iOS, things were handled smartly.

The malicious app can be installed along with the original Crypto Wallet app. The malware allows the attacker to access the back code of the device and allows them to access details that could easily let them steal money from the device.

In addition, ESET researchers discovered 13 fake wallets listed on the Google Play Store, again raising concerns about the app’s security policy. Apple is more stringent, but this report suggests that the App Store could use further supervision of apps making their way into the Store in the future. Crypto is really big, and people are eager to try their luck or invest in digital assets.

But as always, we want users to be careful while downloading apps. Android users should avoid downloading apps from third party sources or any website links sent through untrusted senders.
