First the army took over the responsibility of protecting the border
In 1947, the Indian Army took over the responsibility of security at the check post. It was initially deployed by the Kumaon Regiment. The first flag hoisting ceremony here was held on 11 October 1947 under the supervision of Brigadier Mohinder Singh Chopra. The then DC of Amritsar Narinder Singh and SP Attari Choudhary Ram Singh assisted in the establishment of the Joint Check Post.

Punjab Police got the responsibility in 1950 and BSF in 1965
In the mid-1950s, the area was taken over by the Punjab Police. The first retreat ceremony was held here in 1959. On 1 December 1965, the Border Security Force (BSF) was formed and took over the responsibility. Since then, retreat ceremonies have been taking place every day. This ceremony was stopped for some time during the war between India and Pakistan in 1965 and 1971.

Army and police used to monitor the border earlier
In the month of April 1965, Pakistan came down to its despicable antics. On April 9, 1965, Pakistan attacked two Indian posts in the Rann of Kutch, about 100 km from the city of Bhuj in Gujarat. At that time the border in the said area was being guarded by the CRPF and the State Police of Gujarat. The battle lasted for about 15 hours. 34 Pakistani soldiers were killed and 4 soldiers were taken prisoner of war. After this Indira Gandhi announced the formation of BSF to protect the borders. KF Rustamji was the first Director General of the Border Security Force.
