Mapusa : The state government has finalized the plan for the construction of a new bridge parallel to existing Old bridge across taro river In Mapusa, local MLA Joshua D’Souza recently said.
“There are plans to build two parallel bridges with a four-lane system. The proposed bridge will be built first and the old one will be replaced later,” said D’Souza, who is also the vice-chairman of the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation. Foundation stone will be laid in a month New The bridge is expected to be constructed by early 2022.
He said that the project will help decongest the area as vehicular traffic has increased on the bridge and the narrowing of the bridge has made it difficult to manage the traffic.
The bridge connects several villages with the city of Mapusa, including Aldona, Moira, Nachinola, Pomburpa, Salvador do Mundo, Socorro, Ucasame and Bastora. Mapusa is a commercial center and many of these neighboring villages depend on it for their daily needs like groceries, fish etc.
The new bridge will not have a pole built in the middle of the river, and, therefore, will not pose any threat to the flow of the river.
D’Souza said they would like to avoid throwing any debris into the river, a problem that has affected the river’s flow during highway construction.
Both had recently inspected the river Mapusa MLA and Shubhangi Waingankar, President of Mapusa Municipal Council along with all stakeholders and government officials.
