‘Never Lived for Any Post’: Sidhu Praises Channi’s Rise As Punjab CM

Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu on Sunday said that he never held any post and hailed the decision to make Charanjit Singh Channi the chief minister of the state. Sidhu said this while addressing a virtual rally in Ludhiana, where Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will announce the party’s CM face for the assembly elections to be held on February 20. For the past several weeks, both Channi and Sidhu have made a case for being announced, directly or indirectly, as the party’s candidate for the top post.

Sidhu said, “During his political career spanning 17 years, Sidhu never held any position, but always wanted the betterment of Punjab and the improvement of the lives of the people.” Appreciating the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, he said that it was he who had made a Dalit the chief minister of the state last year.

“This is a moment of change, Inquilab, which can make people’s lives better,” Sidhu said. “We don’t need anything, we only need the welfare of Punjab. My love for Punjab always wanted its betterment,” he said.

Earlier, Sidhu had tweeted that he would follow the party’s decision on the face of the CM, which he reiterated during the virtual rally. Targeting former CM Amarinder Singh, Sidhu said that he used to dance to the tune of BJP. He alleged, ‘Now Amarinder Singh talks of double engine. They have looted Punjab. Amarinder Singh had quit the Congress last year after his unofficial exit as the state’s chief minister and floated a new party, the Punjab Lok Congress, which is contesting the elections in the state in alliance with the BJP.

In his address, Chanjit Singh Channi said that 700 farmers sacrificed their lives during the agitation against the Centre’s agricultural laws. Channi said, “Who is responsible for this? It is the BJP government and the Akali Dal, which approved the agriculture ordinances, plus the AAP government (in Delhi) notified the agriculture law. Now, they ask for votes here,” Channi said. Channi said. ,

Channi then directed most of his attacks on the Aam Aadmi Party, saying they could not bring any change in Punjab. Gandhi reached Ludhiana on Sunday to hold a virtual rally and announce the party’s chief ministerial face.

Chief Minister Channi, senior party leaders KC Venugopal, Harish Chaudhary and Sunil Jakhar are also present in the virtual rally. During his last visit to Punjab on January 27, Gandhi announced at a virtual rally that the Congress would soon announce its chief ministerial candidate and a decision would be taken after consulting party workers.

Apart from taking feedback from its leaders and workers, the Congress sought public opinion on who should be its chief ministerial candidate through an automated call system.
