Nepal’s Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on Saturday expressed his gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government for evacuating four Nepalese citizens stranded in Ukraine amid a military strike by Russia. The evacuation of Nepalese students was done as part of India’s ‘Operation Ganga’, which was launched on February 24 to bring back Indians stranded in Ukraine after a military attack by Russia.
“Four Nepalese nationals have just arrived in Nepal from Ukraine via India. Thanks to Prime Minister @narendramodi and Government of India for helping bring back Nepalese citizens through #OperationGanga.” Last week, the Indian government evacuated two Nepalese nationals from Ukraine.
Earlier, the Nepalese government approached the Indian government for the evacuation of its stranded citizens. India has brought back around 18,000 Indians as part of ‘Operation Ganga’, which was launched on February 26, two days after Russia launched its military offensive on Ukraine.
Meanwhile, The Kathmandu Post newspaper reported that India has so far evacuated six Nepalese. The report, quoting the Nepalese Embassy in New Delhi, said that a total of six Nepalese nationals, including four Nepalis who were brought from Ukraine on Saturday, have been rescued by the Indian government.
According to Nepal’s ambassador to Germany, Ram Qazi Khadka, who is also recognized for looking after Ukraine, the evacuation of Nepalese nationals from Ukraine has almost come to an end. Khadka said that a total of 580 Nepalese nationals have come out of Ukraine after Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
On February 24, three days after Moscow recognized separate regions of Ukraine – Donetsk and Luhansk – as independent entities, Russian forces began military operations in Ukraine.
