A court in Nepal on Thursday released cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane on bail, more than three months after he was arrested on rape charges, officials said.

According to court officials, a joint bench of Patan High Court Justices Dhruvraj Nanda and Ramesh Dhakal decided to release Lamichhane on a surety of Rs 20 lakh, overturning the Kathmandu district court’s decision.

However, 22-year-old Lamichhane has been barred from leaving the country pending the final decision of the court in the case.

On 8 September, a Nepal court issued an arrest warrant for national cricket team captain Lamichhane after a 17-year-old girl alleged that he raped her in a hotel room in Kathmandu.

Lamichhane denied the allegations, saying he was innocent, was participating in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) when the warrant was issued, and was also the captain of the Nepal cricket team.

Lamichhane wrote on Facebook that he would “cooperate fully at all stages of the investigation and fight the legal battle to prove his innocence”.

After reaching Nepal on 6 October, he was arrested and sent to judicial custody.

Lamichhane is Nepal’s most high-profile cricketer, and the first cricketer from Nepal to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL), when he made his debut for the Delhi Capitals franchise in 2018.
