NEP makes fun of education system: Classes of academics

A section of academicians on Friday stressed the need for a farmer-led agitation against the three agricultural laws to demand a return to agriculture. National Policy on Education (NEP.)), which, he said, makes “a mockery of the education system”.

Left-affiliated All India Students’ Union (AISA) held a public meeting on the NEP on Friday and announced its campaign against it. In the meeting, Professor Syed Irfan Habib said, “This government and this NEP want to saffronise our entire culture and our daily lives.”

He said that there is a need for a massive agitation led by farmers against the three controversial agricultural laws to demand the withdrawal of NEP. “Today there is a threat to our brotherhood and education. It is a pity that we have been able to achieve the objectives of equality only through partiality…. We are back to the challenges that were there post Partition. Divisive ideology is being taught.”

“I don’t think a small movement will do anything. This government will only note like the movement which was led by farmers for a year. We have to fight like farmers. The fight to take back NEP was fought on equal footing. Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha also sought inspiration from the farmers’ movement.

He also said that NEP is like a disclaimer document of mutual funds, which has many risks. “Parliament is just a building and since there were wandering spirits in the old building, they decided to build a new one. Don’t trust Parliament. The farmers did not trust the Parliament. He issued the whip. I had said that one day the agricultural laws would be repealed, but I didn’t know that they would be repealed while we were alive.”

He claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not afraid of Parliament but is afraid of people taking to the streets. Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) President Moushumi Basu said that education has to be made a political issue and students and teachers will have to start agitations like farmers.

Delhi University (DU) professor Ratan Lal said the NEP contains “high-sounding phrases” and makes a “joke” of education. “In Jawaharlal Nehru University and Delhi University, parts of the policy are being implemented. If the professor raises his voice, he has to face the so-called disciplinary action.”

Another DU professor Nandita Narayan also agreed with Lal and said that this policy is rhetorical. About the evils of online education, he said that NEP enforces it. AISA announced the launch of a 50-day campaign against the NEP, culminating in a “Parliament Gherao” event during the budget session from across the country.

“The movement will carry out various activities across the country, including collecting signatures and holding protests across all campuses,” the students’ body said in a statement.
