Let’s take a comprehensive look at all the Indian athletes who have won multiple medals for India.

Being an Olympic champion is a decorated feat in itself. But, being a multiple-time Olympic medal winner is one that very few could ever dream of, and for India, the dream had come true twice at the current Paris Olympics, where both Neeraj Chopra and Manu Bhaker have attained their place with the stars, becoming multiple time Olympic medal-winners.

Before these two Olympians, there have been other Indians as well, who have achieved the same immense feat. So, let’s take a comprehensive look at all the Indian athletes who have won multiple medals for India.

Neeraj Chopra – Javelin Throw

The Haryana-based athlete won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago with relative ease, becoming the second Indian athlete ever to win a Gold at the Olympics.

The tale was no different this time around, as he qualified for the javelin throw final at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 on Tuesday (August 6) after topping the qualification rounds. His throw of 89.34m was the best among the 30 athletes who participated in the contest.

Heartbreak entailed but that of the easier kind to digest as Neeraj Chopra clinched a hard-fought Silver in the Men’s Javelin Throw event at the Paris Olympics on Thursday.

The dynamite reigning champion battled it out with Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who would ultimately get the better of Neeraj with an Olympic Record throw of 92.97m, whilst the Indian would register a best of 89.45m for the Silver.

Norman Pritchard – Athletics

Known to very few, but a history maker in all senses. Norman Pritchard was the first Indian to ever win an individual Olympic medal, as well as the first Indian to ever win multiple medals too.

Pritchard was a track-and-field star, clinching two silvers at the 1900 Paris Olympic Games, one each in the Men’s 200m and 200m Hurdles.

Sushil Kumar – Wrestling

It took 112 years for another Indian to recreate Pritchard’s record. And it was in 2012, when Sushil Kumar also added his name to the coveted list.

The ace wrestler started off his medal hunt at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he triumphed in the Men’s 66kg event, where he ultimately bagged the Bronze.

But Sushil was not done yet, as he would go on to script history, bettering his performance in the following 2012 London Olympics, where he snatched a Silver.

PV Sindhu – Badminton

The pride of Indian badminton at one point, PV Sindhu’s prime was one to behold. The ace shuttler, who was named one of the flagbearers for India at the 2024 Paris Olympics, etched her name in the exclusive list with two medals in Badminton.

SIndhu opened her tally with a historic Silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and added another Bronze to her tally at the 2020 Tokyo Games, becoming the third Indian and the first Indian woman to win multiple medals at the Olympics.

Manu Bhaker – Shooting

Indian shooter Manu Bhaker is now a two-time Olympic medallist, an achievement only a few from her country can lay claim to. She joins the likes of PV Sindhu, Sushil Kumar, Norman Pritchard and the men’s hockey team to have won more than one Olympic medal for India.

The 22-year-old shooter is the first India woman to win multiple medals during a single edition of an Olympic Games. On Sunday, she won the bronze medal in women’s 10m Air Pistol individual event of Paris 2024 and a couple of days later, won another bronze, this time in the mixed team event of 10m Air Pistol to create history.
