NED vs WI, 1st ODI: Shai Hope century guides West Indies to 7-wicket win over Netherlands

West Indies opener Shai Hope scored his eleventh one-day international century to help his team win a 45-over game in a seven-wicket win over the Netherlands in Amstelveen on Tuesday.

Although the Dutch scored 240 for seven, the target was adjusted to 247 under the Duckworth-Lewis method, which was crossed by West Indies with 11 balls to spare.

Hope, who scored an unbeaten 119, and fellow opener Shamar Brooks quickly got to grips with the damp conditions, allowing the Dutch pacers to move the ball around, adding 120 runs for the first wicket.

Brooks hit 60 off 67 balls before Logan van Beek dismissed him with a brilliant return catch.

Van Beek removed Nkrumah Bonner leg before the first ball and Aryan Dutt bowled Nicholas Pooran for seven to leave West Indies in slightly dangerous territory for 133 for three.

But Hope held her head and found a solid ally in Brandon King, sharing an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 116 runs.

Hope made his 100 off 113 balls and finished with 119 runs in 130 balls which included 12 fours and two sixes.

Once Hope reached his ton, King hit a six and a four off successive deliveries to Van Beek at the other end.

The 27-year-old Jamaican posted his maiden ODI half-century and scored 58 off 51 balls to club Ryan Klein for the winning boundary.

Vikramjit Singh and Max O’Dowd had given the Dutch a solid start earlier as they put on 60 runs for the first wicket after batting.

Singh was particularly impressive, hitting six fours and two sixes in his 45-ball 47. But the innings lost its initial momentum when he was leg out on review in front of Aqeel Hossein.

O’Dowd (39), Bass de Leede (17) and Scott Edwards (14) hit a four each as West Indies turned the screw.

Teja Nidamanuru, an all-rounder who has played for Auckland in the past, got him back on track, marking his ODI debut with a 51-ball 58, which helped Netherlands reach 240 for seven in their 45 overs. Took in respectable total.

The result gives West Indies a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with the second ODI at Amstelveen on Thursday.
