Navjot Sidhu found his way? Punjab Congress chief will withdraw his resignation as ‘most demands are met’

Congress leader meets Navjot Singh Sidhu Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi will continue to be the president of the Punjab Congress Committee for talks on Thursday, the announcement was made after a high-level meeting that signaled an end to the ongoing turmoil in the state. Sources told News18 that most of Sidhu’s demands have been accepted, and the decision is likely to be formally announced at a cabinet meeting called on October 4.

MLA Gurdeep, who was a part of Channi-Sidhu meeting held at Punjab Bhawan in Chandigarh, said that Sidhu has agreed to withdraw his resignation. Bouquets of two flowers were seen being carried inside Punjab Bhawan. Sidhu agreed to speak with Channi, a day after which the Chief Minister spoke to him and offered to resolve the issues through dialogue.

Just before meeting Channi, Sidhu attacked the new DGP of the state, saying he had wrongly accused two Sikh youths of sacrilege and had given a clean chit to Badal.

There was an alleged desecration of a religious text in Punjab’s Faridkot district in 2015, the investigation of which was handed over by the then Parkash Singh Badal-led government to the SIT headed by current DGP Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota. The Charanjit Singh Channi-led government had given Sahota the additional charge of the state’s DGP, following which Sidhu stepped down as the state Congress president and objected to his appointment.

In a tweet on Thursday, Sidhu said Sahota heads the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the sacrilege case under the Badal government and has “wrongly” accused the two Sikh youths and “clean chit to Badal”. Gave. Sidhu further said that in 2018, he had met the victims along with the current state home minister Sukhjinder Randhawa and the then Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar, assuring “support” in the fight for justice.

Earlier in the day, Sidhu reached Chandigarh from Patiala to meet Channi. Angered by this, Sidhu had on Wednesday questioned the appointment of Director General of Police, State Advocate General and tainted leaders.

The Punjab unit of the Congress is in turmoil after Amarinder Singh was sacked as chief minister and its chief Sidhu resigned from his post ahead of the assembly elections in the state early next year.

Talking to reporters on Wednesday, Channi had said, “I have spoken to Sidhu sahib on telephone today. The party is supreme and the government accepts and follows the ideology of the party. (I told him) you come, sit and talk.” He had said, “If you (Sidhu) think something is wrong, you can tell him.”

When asked what was Sidhu’s reply, Channi had said that the leader had told him that he would sit and talk, and give him time for the meeting.
