The history of National Sports Day in India dates back to 2012 when the Government of India officially declared August 29 as National Sports Day to honour the legendary hockey player, Major Dhyan Chand.

Major Dhyan Chand was born on August 29, 1905, in Allahabad (now Prayagraj). He joined the British Indian Army, where his hockey talent was nurtured. His disciplined lifestyle and rigorous practice helped him become one of the greatest hockey players of all time.

Dhyan Chand led India to three consecutive Olympic gold medals in field hockey: in 1928 (Amsterdam), 1932 (Los Angeles) and 1936 (Berlin). He became an international sports icon due to his incredible skill and precision on the field, earning the nickname “The Wizard of Hockey.”
