The Indian Medical Association (IMA) celebrates National Doctors Day in India on 1 July. During the second wave of coronavirus in the country, many doctors were seen breaking down as they reported that their hospital did not have enough oxygen to rescue Covid patients with severe symptoms. Earlier this month, the IMA wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his personal intervention to ensure an ‘optimal environment’ for medical professionals so that they can work without any fear. Medical workers in some facilities are receiving meager wages, despite their commitment to rescue patients in adverse situations. Earlier in May, Himachal Pradesh Government had announced that it would induct interns, final year MBBS students, nursing and contract doctors in COVID hospitals.

However, the payment that was fixed for newly added medical staff was Rs 1,500 per month for nursing students, contract laboratory staff and GNM third year students.

After much criticism, the payment of fourth and fifth year MBBS students, junior and senior resident doctors and contract doctors was increased to Rs 10,000 per month. BSc and MSc 3rd year nursing students will get Rs 6,000, contract lab staff and GNM students will get Rs 5,000 per month.
