Nasum Ahmed shines as hosts stun Australian in first T20I

Spinner Nasum Ahmed picked up four wickets as Bangladesh defended 131 runs to beat Australia for the first time in Twenty20 Internationals in Dhaka on Tuesday. Left-arm spinner Nasum made a career-best comeback with 4 for 19 to help bowl out the visitors for 108 as Bangladesh took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Mustafizur Rahman and fellow left-arm pacer Shorful Islam took two wickets each to play a key role in their team’s first T20I win over Australia in five attempts. This is the first bilateral series between the two sides as Australia have won their four matches against Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup.

Captain Mahmudullah Riyadh said after the win, “During the half-stage we spoke to the team and they said we were 10 runs short, so we have to field well and put in more effort.”

“That’s what you need while defending low scores and having an aggressive mindset. They are a very good side and we need to tick the boxes that we have failed today in the coming games.”

Mitchell Marsh played a brilliant knock of 45 but the away batting faltered from the start and Alex Carey bowled the first ball to spinner Mahedi Hasan.

Marsh tried to chase down the target with a few partnerships, including a 38-run stand for the fourth wicket with captain Matthew Wade, who scored 13 runs.

Mitchell Starc was the only other Australian batsman to manage double figures before being dismissed for 14 off the last ball of the match.

Earlier, pacer Josh Hazlewood returned figures of 3 for 24 in Bangladesh’s 131 for 7 after Australia elected to bowl first. Starc took two wickets.

Shakib Al Hasan, who survived missing two chances on 18 and 23, top-scored with 36 off 33 balls before being bowled by Hazlewood in the 17th over.

Openers Mohammad Naeem (30), Mahmudullah (20) and Afif Hossain (23 not out) also contributed with the bat.

“I thought the bowlers did a great job restricting them to 130,” Wade said.

“But after losing 3 for 10, Marsh and I tried to revive the innings but unfortunately we could not. We have to find ways to score runs on such pitches.”

The second T20 International match is on Wednesday at this ground.
