Naseeruddin Shah had been in touch with Irrfan Khan during his cancer battle.
Naseeruddin Shah recently revealed in an interview that Irrfan Khan, who was battling cancer, knew about his death for almost two years.
Actor Irrfan Khan fought a brave battle against cancer for more than two years before succumbing to the disease in April 2020. His untimely demise left the fans and the film fraternity in complete shock, but the actor was probably aware of his death. Recalling his last conversation with the late actor, Naseeruddin Shah revealed that Irrfan knew about his death for almost two years. Speaking to The Indian Express in an interview, Shah said that he had spoken to Irrfan several times over the phone even during the phase of his treatment in London and all he knew was that death was approaching.
Shah said the way Irrfan dealt with it was really fascinating. “He’ll say, ‘I see death approaching me and how many people get that opportunity? To see this Grim Reaper coming towards you and you’re almost welcoming him,'” Shah said. He said the damage was terrible, but nothing could be done. It was just the physical machinery shutting down.
The veteran actor also spoke about the obsession over deaths and called it unhealthy. Shah said he had suffered the sudden loss of many family members and friends, but the obsession over death was never going to produce meaningful results. He said that death is the most insignificant part of life and ironically it is also the most inevitable.
Shah said that he does not care about his death, but as long as he is there, he wants to live his life as alert and alive as possible. The actor wanted him to be celebrated and remembered for life instead of his friends mourning his death.
Shah and Irrfan had worked together in several films including Maqbool, Private Detective: Two Plus Two Plus One, 7 Khoon Maaf and others. Both the actors attended the National School of Drama before venturing into theater and films.
