Union minister Narayan Rane failed to appear at the office of the superintendent of police in Maharashtra’s Raigad district on Monday as directed by a court earlier, his lawyer said. Rane’s lawyer Sandesh Smooth appeared on behalf of Rane in the office of local Crime Branch Inspector Dayanand Gawade.

He told the police that Rane could not come as he was not feeling well. Gawade said a police force was deployed near the SP’s office in anticipation of Rane’s arrival in the morning. He said that the situation is normal now.

Along with Chikke, there were also local BJP leaders. Rane was arrested from Ratnagiri district on Tuesday afternoon following his remarks that he might have slapped Chief Minister Thackeray, which he claimed as ignorance of the year of India’s independence.

The Union minister was produced before a magistrate at Mahad in Raigad on Tuesday night. While granting bail to Rane on a surety of Rs 15,000, the court directed him to appear in the office of the Superintendent of Police at Alibaug (Raigad) on August 30 and September 13. Rane faced four FIRs in Maharashtra over his remarks, leading to a political controversy and protests across the state on Tuesday.

An FIR was registered in Mahad under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 189 (threatening to cause hurt to public servant), 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of public peace) and 505 (statement conducive to public mischief).
