Nanda Kishore Prusty, Padma Shri awardee who spent his life educating village children

Eminent educationist and Padma Shri awardee Nand Kishore Prusty passed away on December 7, 2021 at the age of 104 after fighting a long battle with COVID-19. As soon as the news of his death came, many big names including Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned.

Nanda Prusty, popularly known as Nanda Sir, was an exceptional educationist who was awarded the Padma Shri award in the same year.

Although Prusty had only studied till 7th grade, he worked tirelessly to educate the people around him, including children and adults. He was a resident of Kantira village in Jajpur district.

In his native village Kantira, he was known as Nanda Master or Nanda Sir. He had always upheld the tradition of Chatshali while working to educate the masses. The Chatshali tradition refers to a non-formal school for primary education in Odisha.

Every morning the children of the village used to gather near his house. Nand Kishore used to teach them Odia alphabets and how to sign their names. He had successfully increased the literacy rate in his village with his tireless efforts.

What made Nanda Preeti different from others was that she used to give free education to all. He never took any fee for teaching any child. He was teaching children free of cost for the last 70 years. He always lived on the principle that the children he tutored would be his only fee if they grew up to be great human beings.

He was not greedy for money. Despite several educational institutions opening near Kantira, the villagers used to send their children to Nanda Sir to learn Odia alphabets and mathematics.
