Murder of Atiq Ahmed: Mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead on Saturday night in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The incident took place when the police was taking them to the medical college. Moments before the murder, both the criminals were talking to the media while being taken for medical and their murder was caught on camera.

“Nahi le gaye to nahi gaye (They didn’t take us, so we didn’t go)” were Ateeq Ahmed’s last words when asked what he had to say about not being taken to his son Asad’s funeral, news agency According to ANI. “Main baat yeh ki Guddu Muslim…. (The thing is that Guddu Muslim…) were Ashraf’s last words.

The shooting, which took place around 10 pm, was caught on camera as media persons followed the handcuffed duo. A senior police officer said three people have been arrested in connection with the incident, which came two days after Ahmed’s son Asad was killed in a police encounter in Jhansi.

At least three people, posing as media persons, were seen firing at the two from close range. The police soon overpowered the attackers. They have been identified as Lavlesh Tiwari, Sunny and Arun Maurya and are being interrogated by the police.

Case against Ateeq Ahmed

It is noteworthy that Atiq Ahmed was also an accused in the 2005 BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case and Umesh Pal murder case. Pal, a key witness in the murder case of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal, and his two police security guards were shot dead on February 24 outside their Dhoomanganj residence here.

Based on a complaint lodged by Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered on February 25 against Ahmed, Ashraf, Ahmed’s wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, Guddu Muslim and Ghulam and nine others.

A police team from Uttar Pradesh brought Ahmed, lodged in the high-security Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, to Prayagraj on March 26 to appear before a court in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case. The court had on March 28 sentenced Ahmed and two others to life imprisonment in the kidnapping case.
