Nagpur: Lata Mangeshkar Hospital, attached to NKP Salve Medical College in the city, is one of the prominent hospitals in Central India now. Established 32 years ago, it was the first hospital in the world to be named after the legendary singer.
“My guide, former Union minister NKP Salve had a sisterly relationship with Lata ji. So, she had affection for our family as well. Didi personally had a great belief in me. That is why she gave us the consent to start a hospital named after her,” remembered former minister Ranjeet Deshmukh, who is chairman of the hospital and college trust. The medical college is named after NKP Salve.
“At present, it’s the only such multi-specialty modern hospital in the world to be named after Lata Mangeshkar,” Deshmukh added. He also explained why the hospital was named after Lata, fondly called the Nightingale of India world over.
“Her personality was very inspiring to us. Lata didi’s father died in 1942 when she was only 13. As she was the eldest of the siblings, the entire responsibility of the family fell on her shoulders. She carried out this responsibility with great courage and made a career for herself and family. This was the reason why we requested her to give her name to our institution,” said Deshmukh.
In the last 32 years, the hospital has been upgraded to 1,130-bed capacity. New campus at Digdoh Hills serves people from nearby villages and industrial areas of Central India. During Covid-19 pandemic, this hospital saved many lives.
“We will continue to work to perpetuate her memories,” said one of the directors of the hospital and former MLA Ashish Deshmukh. “Lata Mangeshkar Hospital will continue to provide modern services to needy patients at affordable expenses,” he said.
