Soon after the gang rape was reported early on August 25, the police had formed five teams to nab the accused. Police was able to arrest five people within four days of the incident and another accused three days later.
Initially it was assumed that only six persons were involved in the crime. Accordingly, an FIR was registered by the Alanahalli police against six unidentified persons. The name of another accused surfaced after five people, including a 17-year-old boy, were arrested. He was immediately arrested for his alleged role in the crime.
The members had allegedly gang-raped a 22-year-old MBA student at Lalitadripura hill next to Chamundi Hills on August 24. She was severely assaulted after she tried to take money from her male partner. Sources said that before committing the crime, they had demanded Rs 3 lakh from the student couple.
The Karnataka Police was able to nab them within three days. Bus tickets found at the crime scene, along with other scientific evidence, helped quickly zero in on the men in khakis.
The accused often used to come to Mysore from their hometowns in connection with work. He did bureaucratic work and worked as a daily wage earner in the marketing yard. Two of them were goods drivers who used to transport vegetables between the towns of Mysore and Tamil Nadu.
Preliminary investigation has now revealed that some of the gang members are habitual offenders and had committed crimes like dacoity and cutting of sandalwood trees during their travels on the outskirts of Mysore. In August, he sexually assaulted a college student before leaving Mysore.
